Monday, at its conference at MWC 2014 Sony unveiled two new smartphones – the Xperia M2 and Xperia Z2. The Xperia M2 aims to mid-range, while the Xperia Z2 will represent the high end of the manufacturer for this year 2014.

Xperia M2

Xperia M2 is the successor to the Xperia M smartphone which was introduced in the second half of 2013, the Xperia M2 looks like the cheapest 4G smartphone in Sony’s catalog with a price of €220 ($302) . It will be available in three colors including white, black and violet.

With only 8.6 millimeters thick, Sony’s Xperia M2 clearly stand out in the design. The manufacturer specifies and that is the thinnest smartphone in its class.

Technical features include a 400 chipset with a Snapdragon 400 chipset with a quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal storage with microSD card expansion up to 32GB and a 2330mAh battery. It will also be equipped with a 4G LTE antenna. For the multimedia part, there is a 4.8″ TFT display with 540×960 pixels resolution and a camera of 8 megapixels.

Xperia M2 device will be available in a dual SIM variant in some markets using the name Xperia M2 dual. The Sony Xperia will be available worldwide in April 2014.

Sony Xperia Z2

Xperia Z2 was probably the most anticipated device by the manufacturer, after presenting the Xperia Z and Z1 in 2013.


The main highlighted is the Xperia Z2 is the screen of the device, which is now 5.2 inches and uses Sony’s Triluminos LED display with Live Colours. Sony promises more richer colors without having a saturated as some of their competitors devices.

The smartphone is even thinner 8.2 mm against 8.5 mm – Z2 boasts a larger screen, 5.2 inches against 5 for the Z1, though the resolution remains unchanged at 1920 x 1080. In line with LG and its G2, Sony has finally managed to reduce the size of the edges around the screen for a more attractive design, where the mineral glass on both facades and steel for the chassis remain predominant.


In terms of equipment, the Xperia Z2 generally includes the main features of the Z1. It features 20.7 MP Exmor RS for mobile CMOS image sensor and BIONZ for mobile image processing engine. Xperia Z2 comes with 3200mAh battery, 3GB of RAM, and a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801.

The other good news is the thickness of Z2: the unit has lost 3 mm (8.5 mm Z1, Z2 8.2 mm) for better grip. In contrast, the weight remains the same (170 grams) heavier than its direct competitors iPhone 5s (112 grams) and the Galaxy S4 (130 grams) model.
