Smartphones market is fiercer than ever and is not giving any manufacturer chance to sit back and enjoy laurels. 2013 started with the launch of premiums flagship smartphones from HTC and Samsung in the form of One and Galaxy S4. Both of the smartphones sports top of the line hardware with lots of software enhancements on top of Android OS.
Even Apple facing the heat of Android smartphones available in every shape, size and price seems to be preparing to launch two versions of iPhone- iPhone 5S targeting budget customers and a premium iPhone 6 as a successor to iPhone 5.
While, launch of Galaxy S4 Mini and One Mini (code named M4) is confirmed, we can’t be sure about Apple’s two-pronged strategy for smartphones as they have always released a smartphone every year. But, let’s see what rumors suggest about these devices and how will they fare against each other-
HTC One and Galaxy S4 were unveiled in the month of March and released in the market in April. So, their mini versions would probably be launched during June or July. Also, seeing the Apple’s previous launches of iPhone, iPhone 5S may be announced during Apple’s WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) to be held in June. Thus, all of the devices will possibly be launched in the same timeframe between June-July (Q2 2013).
With the S4 and One retailing at $200 on contract, S4 mini and One mini would be costing around $99. One can’t talk about iPhone 5S’s price since usually Apple’s product are significantly on the higher side. But, we’re sure that it is targeted towards people who want an Apple product, but can’t pay premium price of iPhone 6.
Display & Design
S4 Mini will be having a pocketable size with a Super AMOLED screen of 4.3 inches with resolution of 960 x 540 pixels equating to 256 ppi. Similar to its bigger brother, it will have a plastic body making it light-weight and thinner.
Like S4 Mini, One Mini will also be having a 4.3 inches display with 720 p resolution. It’ll sport the same aluminum uni-body chassis for which HTC One have garnered huge praise from tech community. It could be available in two colors- Black and White.
iPhone 5S is rumored to have a 4 inch screen with no reports about its resolution or chassis.
As per speculations, S4 Mini would be having 1.6 GHz dual-core processor as compared to quad-core and octa-core variants on S4. It will be accompanied by a RAM of 1 GB. It will have two variants with internal storage of 8GB/ 16GB with an option of expanding memory via microSD cards. Galaxy S4 might have a dual-SIM variant as well.
Mini version of HTC One is rumored to have a dual-core processor coupled with 2 GB of RAM. It will be having internal storage of 16 GB with no option for expandable memory. It will be having same ultrapixel camera of HTC One and a non-removable battery of 1700 mAh.
iPhone 5S will be powered by a dual-core processor and sport a 8 megapixel camera. No word about its battery and memory details.
Software and other enhancements
Both Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and HTC One Mini will be having latest version of JellyBean OS (Android 4.2) with customization of their own in the form of TouchWiz and Sense interface respectively. But, we can be sure that for keeping costs low S4 Mini will not be having features like Air View, Air Gestures, Smart Scroll, Smart Play, IR Remote, etc. Similarly, One Mini might have BlinkFeed (news and social updates on the home screen like Flipboard), but will not feature IR blaster and camera enhancements like HTC Zoe.
Apple iPhone 5S will be running on Apple’s latest operating system- iOS 7 which is said to be having a flat and minimalistic design. It could also have NFC support and Wireless charging.
As none of the smartphones have been officially released, we can’t say which one would better. But, it’s surely would get customers excited as they would be able to get their hands on Mini versions of flagship phones offering good mix of hardware and software at an affordable price.
